Muskoka Dark Ale

What a winter we have been having in Toronto. Over the last few weeks it’s been so warm that this BeerSnob has been dreaming of spring. As hard as it is to believe on February 6th 2012 (in Canada!!!) it was warm enough for me to sit outside on a patio with one of the lighter beers that I enjoy (Steam Whistle) in the sun. Today is a bit of a different story, the wind has picked up, the air has cooled down and ice is forming on my windows. All that said with the rapid drop in temps I figured I’d cross back over to the dark side and grab a dark ale to warm the soul.

With my mind still on sunny days and cottages while shivering my way to the beer store (a 45 second walk from my front door) I decided to try a Muskoka Dark. When they say dark they know what they are talking about, the color is so dark that when I hold it up to the light stays fairly black with deep redish tones, but I can’t see the lamp through the glass. It’s got a low carbonation level, and a very fine layer of a foamy head. It starts out with a quick jab of hops (sadly it ends quickly), falls off a bit in the middle flavour wise, but finishes strong with a nice caramel, chocolate malted finish I’d expect on a cold night like tonight. On my first few sips, I have to say I was not overly impressed (maybe a 1.5 on my system, that said, by the time I finished I wished I had more. I guess the moral of the story here is always drink the whole can before passing judgement.
